Our Services

The Rylands is managed by Helen Bowen, a very experienced Registered Nurse and manager. She is supported by a deputy manager who is an experienced registered nurse and a highly experienced team of qualified nurses, carers and housekeeping and kitchen staff. Over 50% of our carers have attained a level 2 qualification or above in Health and Social Care.

As a nursing and residential home we care for people over 65, and can generally meet all needs. We are able to care for people under 65 by special agreement.  Prior to admission prospective service users have an assessment the information from which is used to form part of the individual service users plan. All service users have a mutually agreed service plan, which is confidential and specific to them to ensure that their individual needs are met. This is reviewed with them and their representatives on a regular basis.

There are doctors from two GP surgeries who visit every week. We will help you to register with them or you are welcome to stay registered with your own doctor if they are happy for this.

Visitors are welcome at any time. All we ask is that you sign in and out of our visitors book in the hall.

Visitors are welcome in your room or the communal areas.

We have a mixture of accommodation including mainly single en-suite rooms as well as a few double and single rooms. All rooms have their own wash hand basin.

All rooms are furnished, but you are welcome to bring personal items of furniture, by prior arrangement. Any electrical equipment must be checked by our electrician before you can use it. We have two large, bright lounges, as well as a large conservatory, all of which overlook the gardens. There is a spacious dining area, where you are welcome to take all meals.

All of our bathrooms have specially adapted baths, to meet the differing needs of our clients. This makes bathing an easier and more pleasurable experience. There is also a large walk in shower room which can be used by clients of differing needs.  A new passenger lift was installed in April 2008.

You will be cared for by the team of nurses and carers, according to your needs, 24 hours a day. Our trained and experienced cooks and team of kitchen staff provide first class home cooked meals from scratch every day. All of our meat and vegetables are sourced locally and we do not use processed food. There is a choice available and all diets can be catered for. Hot and cold drinks are available at all times. We encourage service users to eat in the dining room, but meals can be served in your room if preferred.

All laundry is done on site. It is essential that all clothes and personal items are labeled before admission. We can only be responsible for named items and we will be happy to give advice about finding suitable labels.

All communal areas are cleaned daily and your room will be cleaned on a regular basis by one of the team of housekeeping staff.

We have a varied programme of entertainment and social activity which you are welcome to join in with as much or as little as you like. It includes bingo, gentle exercise, quizzes, music, singing, games, film evenings and massage. The programme is displayed in the entrance hall.

We also have visiting entertainers e.g. singers, local brass band, Morris Dancers, local schools. Where possible service users are taken out to local events.

We have a range of books on loan from the local library which are changed on a regular basis and are available for you to borrow. This includes a selection of talking books.

We have close liaison with local churches and there is usually a communion service, in the lounge, once a month. Service users are welcome to make their own arrangements which we will help with if required.

We also now have internet access available throughout the building which clients can access free of charge as well as a computer for their use.

Staff qualifications and training

All staff, including nurses, carers, housekeeping and kitchen, take part in regular training.

This includes mandatory training e.g. Moving and Handling and food hygiene and training in other areas of special interest or expertise such as advanced wound care and Palliative Care.

We are very proud of the vast experience of all our staff. In addition to the qualified nurses, over 50% of our carers have achieved a level 2 or above qualification in Health and Social Care.
